IRAF append/prepend/replace
IRAF has special syntax to append/replace, so you can do something like: imarith *.fits - dark.fits ds_//*.fits
...though I can't remember right now how to do replacement etc.

From the FILES task help page:
5. Use string substitution to change the filename extension of a set of files to ".y".
cl> files root.%*%y%
Thanks! It's hard to search documentation for things like %% and //. I'm happy to see that there's an irafnet user lurking around the webs.
